Yukti vs Tally: Accounting Leader vs AI-Native Open Source ERP

Comparing Tally and Yukti feature-for-feature only tells half the story, because they are not really competing for the same job. Tally is accounting and GST billing software, and it is excellent at that job. Yukti is a full ERP where accounting is one module among many, sitting alongside inventory, manufacturing, CRM, HR, and AI-native automation, all sharing the same database.

That difference in scope shows up in the numbers: Tally's own inventory and payroll modules are solid, but there is no CRM, no project management, and manufacturing support is limited to Bill of Materials and manufacturing journals for basic assembly rather than production scheduling or shop-floor routing. Businesses that only need accounting and GST rarely feel that gap. Businesses running production lines, sales pipelines, or multi-department operations do.

This is Tally's home turf, and it shows. Connected GST files and uploads returns directly from within TallyPrime, native TDS and TCS deduction with challan generation, and auto-reconciled GSTR-2A/2B data are all built into the core product. Two decades of refinement against India's changing GST rules is not something a newer platform can claim to match on day one.

Yukti covers the same compliance ground: GSTR-1/3B filing, e-invoicing with IRN generation, e-way bills, TDS/TCS automation, and GSTR-2A/2B reconciliation are all built in. The functional coverage is comparable. What differs is everything around it: how the books connect to inventory, manufacturing, and CRM, and how much of that compliance work AI can do automatically rather than requiring manual review.

TallyPrime is, at its core, a desktop-installed Windows application. That is a deliberate design choice with real benefits: it runs fully offline by default, which matters in areas with unreliable internet, and it feels fast because there is no network round trip for every entry. Remote browser access and real-time multi-device sync exist, but through the separate paid TallyPrime Cloud Access add-on, and there is no native mobile app.

Yukti is cloud-hosted or self-hosted by design, with browser-based access from any device and native mobile apps for sales and field workflows out of the box. The tradeoff is that Yukti needs network connectivity to the cloud or self-hosted server; it does not run offline the way Tally does. For a business with one accountant on one desktop, that tradeoff barely matters. For a business with people entering data from a warehouse, a shop floor, and a sales team all working the same day, it matters a lot.

TallyPrime 7.1 introduced Tally Ira, an AI feature that reads scanned bills and auto-fills ledger entries. Combined with Connected Banking for bank reconciliation, it is a genuine step forward for a category that historically had none of this. It is not, however, agentic AI running across the rest of the product; it is one AI feature applied to one workflow.

Yukti's 14 purpose-built AI modules run across finance, inventory, and sales, including bank reconciliation automation and automated reminders and follow-ups baked into day-to-day workflows rather than a single scanning feature. If AI-driven automation across the whole business, not just document capture, is what you are evaluating, this is the widest gap between the two products.

Tally sells a one-time, per-device license: Silver at ₹22,500 for a single device, Gold at ₹67,500 for multi-device use on a network, both plus 18% GST. That one-time price is attractive on paper, but a paid Tally Software Services renewal is required from year two onward to keep receiving updates and support, so the true multi-year cost is higher than the sticker price alone suggests. Tally is not open source.

Yukti's Community edition is free, self-hosted, and open source with unlimited users and full source code access. The Enterprise AI tier runs $9.99/user/month with managed hosting included. Which is cheaper depends entirely on scope: for accounting and GST alone, Tally's one-time fee can work out lower in year one. For full ERP capability across finance, inventory, manufacturing, and CRM, Yukti's per-user model scales more predictably as the business grows.

We are not going to pretend this is a close contest on market presence. Tally holds roughly 70% of the Indian accounting software market with 35 million-plus users, and it is the software nearly every Indian accountant, bookkeeper, and CA has already used. That familiarity lowers hiring friction, training time, and the risk of finding local support when something goes wrong.

Yukti is a younger, growing open source ERP, and our installed base and pool of trained implementers in India are smaller today. If keyboard-driven speed and a large existing talent pool of Tally operators are what your business needs most right now, that is a real, honest reason to stay with Tally.
