AI agents represent the next evolution beyond traditional automation. Rule-based automation follows predetermined if-then logic: if inventory drops below the reorder point, create a purchase order. An AI agent goes further by considering context, learning from outcomes, and adapting its behavior. It might determine the optimal reorder quantity based on demand trends, select the best supplier based on recent performance and current pricing, and time the order to take advantage of volume discounts or favorable exchange rates. In an ERP system, AI agents can operate at different levels of autonomy. At the lowest level, they act as advisors: analyzing data and presenting recommendations for human approval. At a middle level, they handle routine decisions autonomously and escalate exceptions. At the highest level, they operate fully autonomously within defined boundaries, only involving humans for genuinely novel situations. The appropriate autonomy level depends on the stakes involved. An AI agent managing office supply orders might operate fully autonomously because the cost of a wrong decision is low. An AI agent recommending a million-dollar capital equipment purchase should present its analysis for human decision-making. The key is configurable autonomy: the business decides where to set the line, and the AI agent operates within those boundaries. Effective AI agents need three things: access to relevant data (across the ERP, not just within one module), clear objectives (minimize stockouts while keeping inventory below $X), and feedback loops (tracking whether their decisions produced good outcomes so they can improve over time).
